Homemade Bagels

As a parent of a farming family, I want my family to enjoy low-processed foods with minimal salt and sugar. This is my homemade bagel recipe. Made with common, “known” ingredients - it’s great for the entire family!

Fresh, homemade bagels for the entire family!

Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour (Bread, all purpose, or wheat)
  • 2 1/4 tsp instant yeast (1 package)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp molasses
  • 1/2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp baking soda + 5-6 cups water
  • 1 egg (optional)

Optional toppings:

  • Sliced jalapeños and cheddar cheese
  • Everything seasoning
  • Onion and garlic powder

Directions

  1. Add flour, yeast, salt, water, molasses into a large bowl or stand mixer.
  2. Knead 10 min by hand or 5 min by stand mixer.
  3. Add water or flour, 1 tbsp at a time, as needed.
  4. Spread olive oil around a large bowl, place dough ball in bowl.
  5. Cover and place in a a warm location to let rise for 15 minutes.
  6. Boil 5-6 cups water with baking soda.
  7. Preheat oven to 425°F.
  8. Turn dough on floured surface and knead dough on floured surface until smooth.
  9. Cut into 6 pieces and mold into bagel shapes.
  10. Prepare paper towel on a cooling rack and line baking tray with parchment paper.
  11. Place bagel shaped dough into boiling baking soda water and boil on each side for 45 seconds.
  12. Place bagels on a paper towel to cool while you boil the rest of the dough.
  13. Move bagels to lined baking tray and top with your desired toppings.
  14. Bake at 425°F for 18-20 minutes.
  15. Let cool on tray.

Slice, toast, and enjoy!
